A Psalm of grace and salvation

PSALM 71

My Rock and Refuge You Have Been

My Rock and Refuge you have been

You love me even though I sin

Instead of sending discipline

You sent your Son o’er sin to win

For when all hope I think is gone

I sink down low and feel alone

Then Jesus comes, his victory won

To help me with life’s course to run

Forget me not in my old age

You’ve faithful been at every stage

As I walk though life’s pilgrimage

I praise you for my heritage

Walk in the strength of God our Lord

Tell everyone with one accord

How Jesus’ death did us award

The gift of heaven now restored

Lord, countless times I’ve turned to Thee

And watched for you to rescue me

Your good and just ways I now see

Coming from Christ who set me free

Where is there such a God as you?

When trouble came no one we knew

Could have reached down to us renew

And promise grace like you can do

Now I am bound the world to tell

Of how you rescued me from hell

So I’d with you in heaven dwell

All praise to you, Immanuel

Affliction encountered in and by old age prompted David to pen this psalm.  A lifetime of experiences of receiving help from God sets him down pleading with God not to forget him because he’s old.  Then in confidence he expresses the fulness of his belief in God’s constant presence, proposing to share it all with the world in songs of praise, joy and thanksgiving.
