PSALM 59

Protect Me From My Enemies

Protect me from my enemies

Their goal is to destroy.

Lord, may I never you displease

Or even you annoy.

REFRAIN

Praises I sing to you, my God.

You are a God of mercy.

Preserve me, Lord, from any harm

To body or to soul

Extend to me your strong right arm

Hold me close; make me whole

REFRAIN

Punish me not for sinful deeds

Lord, look on me with love

Send down your Spirit; meet my needs

Prepare my home above.

REFRAIN

Power and might are on display

Your awesome strength we see

We come to you to hear you say:

“I still your God will be!”

REFRAIN

A place of safety you will be

O God, your love’s the same

A shield of love you are to me

I call upon your name

REFRAIN

Key words in this psalm all start with the letter “P” as David appeals to God to defend and deliver him from his enemies.  He anticipates God’s intervention and therefore sings God’s praises in advance.  As we direct our prayers to God do they include praises as well as pleadings?
