A Psalm of longing

PSALM 13

How Long, O Lord, How long?

How long, O Lord, how long?

How long will sin hold sway?

How long will you forget?

And turn the other way.

My anguish don’t you see?

My sorrow consumes me

Give answer to my prayer.

Give answer to my prayer.

How long, O Lord, how long?

How long before I trust?

How long before I cleave?

To your Word fair and just.

All sin I leave behind

In heart and soul and mind

And give myself to you.

And give myself to you.

How long, O Lord, how long?

How long before I love?

How long before I sing?

Of  Christ, your Son, above

Your saving grace he brought

Our souls by Him were bought

For you alone I live.

For you alone I live.

Does God really withdraw himself from us, or do we in our moments of affliction

allow our doubts get the best of us?  And when that affliction lasts a long time, it

is not uncommon for us to tire of it and let our despondency turn to despair.  Still,

it is not bad to address our complaints to God as he is certainly big enough to

understand our feelings of frustration and not turn us away.  Instead, when we

turn our prayers from pouting to praise, as did the Psalmist, we see the power of

our faith in God turn into an anchor in the midst of the storms of life.  David’s

faith enabled him to look back on former times when the mercy of God came to

his rescue.  So we, knowing the ultimate mercy of God in Jesus Christ, can fill

our hearts with rejoicing in our salvation.
