PSALM 137

When Our Lives Are Captive

When captive though our lives may be

When hearts are sore and will not sing

Lord, give our souls the strength to see

The kind of hope your Son will bring.

When sin surrounds us e’er so drear

And troubled hearts begin to weep

God’s Word alone will bring us cheer

For in his hands our souls he’ll keep.

When we begin to question why

And wonder where the Lord has gone

Know that he ne’er stands idly by

But points to what his Son has done.

Penned while Israel was in captivity in Babylon and unable to find any cause for joy, this is a psalm of lament.  Yet, remember, as did the Israelites, when you feel that way that with God there is always a day of reckoning.
