God's love endures forever

Psalm136score.jpg

PSALM 136

Give Thanks to God

Give thanks to God for he is good.
His mercy stands forever sure

He does just what he said he would

His mercy stands forever pure.

Upon the earth he sends the rain

His mercy stands forever sure.

O praise him for the sun that reigns

His mercy stands forever pure.

He leads and guides His people.

His mercy stands forever sure.

He blesses those who love the Lord.

His mercy is forever pure.

He nourishes all living things

His mercy stands forever sure

He keeps us safe beneath his wings

His mercy stands forever pure.

Twenty-six times the phrase “for his mercy endures forever” is repeated in this psalm.  Let not vain repetition cloud our hearts from the magnitude of its meaning for our very existence:

He created this wonderful world in which we live and each day leads us to discover the magnificent manner by which he provides for all our needs.

Does not the constant urging to praise God (that is found here and in so many other psalms) suggest strongly that the giving of thanks and offering praise to him is his greatest expectation from our prayers?   While we are to most certainly repent of our sins before God, that is the first thing done in prayer so as to clear away all obstructions to our deepest and most heartfelt praise of the God whose greatest gift (worthy of all praise) is the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.  Let not vain repetition, complacency or neglect lead us away from our praise of him who is the giver of every good and perfect gift.
