PSALM 94

Shine Forth, O Lord, and Bless

Shine forth, O Lord, and bless

All those who come to you.

Rise up when we transgress

Forgive us and renew

Our every thought is known

Our sins and weaknesses, too.

Your Son came to atone

And bring us back to you.

O Lord, the judge of earth

How long shall evil rule?

Show us how much we’re worth

Save us from all that’s cruel.

You, Lord, are like a rock

You make us feel secure

We’re one with all your flock

For Jesus made that sure.

You, Lord, will not reject

Your people, all, who come

They’re part of the elect

With heaven as their home.

When we in weakness sink

Or anxious we become

You’re there with us to link

With strength to overcome.

The Church of God is under persecution by the presence of the wicked ones who are but a reminder of our sins and shortcomings.  Two themes are found here:  A solemn appeal to God against their oppressors with a litany of the terrors and tribulations they bring upon the people.  Secondly, and this hymn centers on this theme – the promise of rest, comfort, and victory for those afflicted, calling for encouragement to remain faithful.
