PSALM 75

We Call Upon Your Name

We call upon your name

To you we give acclaim.

With miracles you share

How much you care.

O Lord, you are the one

The victory you have won.

Though all the world will shake

In turmoil people quake.

My pillar you shall be.

In Christ you set me free.

O Lord, you are the one

The victory you have won.

In arrogance the proud

Will shake their fists unbowed

But soon the Lord steps in

And then he’ll discipline

O Lord, you are the one.

The victory you have won.

Let us declare in praise

The Lord controls our days

He strengthens us, his own

And us in Christ atone.

O Lord, you are the one.

The victory you have won.

God reigns supreme in all the affairs of his children, so David gives praise to God
for all the great things he has done, and in turn promises to rule his people
with wisdom and power from God.

PSALM 76
The Lord, Our God, is So Well Known

The Lord, our God, is so well known
That everywhere his name is praised.
How brightly has his glory shown.
There in its glow our hopes are raised.

We pledge our vows unto the Lord.
We bring our gifts before his throne.
O freely let them, be outpoured
In praise of him who stands alone.

Nothing, Lord, can with you compare.
You are alone the mighty one
Your fallen foes will then declare
T'was by your hand the victory's won.

We pledge our vows of faithfulness to the one true God whose glory shines over
all the earth. The day will come when all the earth will bow before Jesus Christ
and worship him as King of kings.

PSALM 77
I Cry to You

I cry to you, please listen, Lord.

I lie awake, I cannot sleep

My life is filled with great discord

A watch o‘er me I pray you’ll keep.

REFRAIN:  Though thunder claps, through lightning snaps,

Though water rises before our eyes;

The Lord will not His promise break.

He’s with you now for Jesus’ sake.

When I look back to days now past

I know you will not me disown

Nor shall my troubles ever last

In Christ your love has brightly shown

REFRAIN

I’ll follow you, Lord, all my days

To you I’ll sing with endless song

I’ll fill my heart with joyous praise

To you alone I now belong.

REFRAIN

Holy, holy are you, my Lord

Your constant love to me you’ve shown.

You sent your Son, his blood outpoured

In life and death I am your own.

REFRAIN

I thank you, Lord for leading me

Upon the path that I should go.

You sent your Son to Calvary

To make that way so clear I’d know.

REFRAIN

How deeply affected the writer of this psalm is by all his troubles. However,
rather than despair, he remembers God's help in the past and that encourages
and comforts him in the present. What a wonderful transition can be made
 to the comfort Christ offers!

PSALM 78

O My people, Listen to Me

O my people, listen to me.

Open your ears to what I say.

My ways are meant to set you free.

I am your God; my will obey.

REFRAIN

FORGET NOT ALL OF WHAT I’VE DONE

TO WIN YOUR SOUL I SENT MY SON.

Glorious deeds I’ve done for you.

From Egypt’s grip I’ve led you out.

Divided seas to lead you through.

When men pursued, I them did rout.

REFRAIN

Quail and manna I did provide.

Waters that gushed and flowing streams,

But still you came to me and cried:

“You failed to give us all our dreams.”

REFRAIN

I led you by day with a cloud.

At night I sent you light by fire.

And still you came and cried aloud:

“You gave us not what we desire.”

REFRAIN

You turned your back and ran away.

You built stone gods to worship there.

I ask why did you disobey

When all I did shows you I care.

REFRAIN:

With words alone you followed me.

Still with your heart you’re far away.

My promise is to make you free.

But by my side you did not stay.

REFRAIN

Then came the day I said to you

Despite your sin, I’ll help you live.

Whatever you’ve done you’ll start anew.

The Promised Land to you I’ll give.

REFRAIN

PSALM 79

We Are Your People, Lord

We are your people, Lord.  Troubled by a world of sin.

We are your people, Lord.  Show us where we can begin.

REFRAIN:   YOUR WORD WE SOW, SO LOVE

WILL FLOW AND ALL WILL KNOW

THE WAY TO GO.

We are your people, Lord.  While sinners will us mock.

We are your people, Lord.  Come and do their hearts unlock.

REFRAIN

We are your people, Lord; many want to you ignore.

We are your people, Lord.  Help us their faith to restore.

REFRAIN

We are your people, Lord.  Let your will no one impede.

We are your people, Lord.  You we praise in word and deed.

REFRAIN

We are your people, Lord.  Save us and forgive our sin.

We are your people, Lord; Jesus did the victory win.

REFRAIN

We are your people, Lord.  Praise and honor to your name

We are your people, Lord.  We know you treat us all the same.

REFRAIN

A prayer for relief from the despicably deplorable conditions under which
the people of God must live.  Notice how the psalmist and his people
praise God for answering that prayer even before it’s granted.
Can we not add a refrain of hope for the salvation of others?

PSALM 80

Give Ear, O Shepherd, to Your Flock

Give ear, O Shepherd, to your flock

Bend down your ear and hear our plea.

Remove from us sin’s stumbling block,

From all that binds now make us free.

When God seems not to hear us pray,

And we surmise he’s left our side

He tries our faith that we will stay

True to his word; there to abide.

Your Church, O Lord, is like a vine.

The branches, we, and Christ the root.

When we with him our hearts combine;

The debt of sin you will commute.

That vine now spreads to all the land.

It roots itself deep in each heart.

We pray, O Lord, that it may stand

That from you we may e’er depart.

We express our love for God’s Church in song and prayer, especially
when the Church is under siege, confident of God’s power to help.

 PSALM 81

Sing Praise to God With All Your Might

Sing praise to God with all your might

Beat on the drum

Let trumpets blow

Pluck lyre and harp

Let music flow

Great is our God whose joy shines bright

Call on your God when wearisome.

Open your mouth

He will fulfill

Open your heart

He will it still

He’s there to help us overcome.

Our God feeds us with choicest food

Grain from the earth

Honey from bees

Animals and

Fish from the seas

His blessings are for all our good.

The Lord, our God, in glory reigns

Snowflakes that flutter

Raindrops fall

The whispering winds

The sun warms all

The Lord, our God, in glory reigns

Give God the glory and take instructions from him.  These are the two main themes
in this psalm.  We neglect these duties to our own detriment.  God delights
in our serving him, not because he is better for it, but because we are.

PSALM 82

From Lofty Throne God Rules Us All

From lofty throne God rules us all

Appointing those he chose to lead

From Him alone they have their call

His desire is we give them heed.

Then blessings will upon us fall

And God will give us all we need.

Defend the poor; judge all aright

Leaders, this is the Lord’s demand.

Speak not of them with words of spite

But help each other understand

God put them there as his bright light

To bring his peace to our fair land.

But woe to those who lead astray

God’s chosen ones with unjust acts.

And woe to those who fall away

And fail to do their given tasks.

God’s judgment on their sinful way

Is they shall die for their attacks.

Arise, O God, and save us all

Stand by the weak and those in need

By your Son’s blood we shall not fall

For by his death he all men freed.

Arise, O God, and save us all

By your Son’s blood we shall not fall.

God placed earthly leaders as his ambassadors to fulfill his will and purposes.  This
psalm speaks of both good and bad rulers and the doom of the latter.

PSALM 83

We Come into Your Presence, Lord

We come into your presence, Lord.

From all that harms grant us release.

Be silent not, but speak your Word

And bring to us a time of peace.

When troubles come and we ask, “why?”

And all our dreams are put on hold

We know our needs you will supply

And in your arms you’ll us enfold.

When things in life cause us dismay.

Make this a time to turn to you

And put our trust in you each day.

Your promise is to us renew.

Know that the Lord hears what you say

And he will answer when you call.

At times his ways are not our way

But never will he let us fall.

O Lord, like wood upon a fire,

Come and consume those who oppose

Your people, Lord, and their desire

To serve Him who from death arose.

A prayer that the church’s enemies might be defeated.  It’s a prayer based
on the promise that God, though appearing silent at times, will hear and answer
in his time and in his way.  That trust is based on God’s Word and his past actions.

 PSALM 84

O Lord, I Love to Worship You

O Lord, I love to worship you

Here in your house I know I’m blest

You help me see my fears are few

And by your grace my heart’s at rest

Your shining glory lights my way

Within it’s brightness I will stay

Great and mighty are you, my Lord

Clothed in glory and in splendor

Your grace on me you have outpoured

You truly are my defender

Your shining glory lights my way

Within it’s brightness I will stay

We praise you here, Emmanuel

A single day spent in your place

Is like a thousand when you dwell

Within my heart so filled with grace

Your shining glory lights my way

Within it’s brightness I will stay.

This psalm reveals the heart and soul of one who yearns for both
solitude in communion with the living God, as well as
corporate worship where all join in praise of God’s glory.

PSALM 85

Blessings Abound

Blessings abound from your great store.

You, Lord, forgave us all our sin.

For us you opened heaven’s door.

You sent you Son to take us in.

He brought us back to loving you.

Your people now rejoice again.

For Jesus gave us the heavenly view.

His death removed the scourge of sin.

Mercy and peace have met in Him

We love because he once lived here.

His love for us will never dim.

He came from heaven to take us there.

His glory now fills all the land

His majesty by all is seen.

His mighty hand will take our hand

And lead us home where life’s serene.

A prayer of thankfulness acknowledging God’s redeeming work in the past.
It is also a prayer for mercy and grace in present distress.

PSALM 86

Hear My Prayer, Lord

[chanted version]

Hear my prayer, Lord.  Hear my prayer, Lord.

Hear my prayer and answer me.

I come to you in despair.

Protect me from the evil one.

Lord, lift me up; my life repair.

Help me believe the victory’s won.

Hear my prayer, Lord.  Hear my prayer, Lord.

Hear my prayer and answer me.

O guide me, Lord, that I may be

Willing to go where’er you lead.

Help me your will to always see

And share your Son who all has freed

Hear, my prayer, Lord.  Hear my prayer, Lord.

Hear my prayer and answer me.

Give me the grace the world to tell

Of what you’ve done to set us free.

Your rescued all from depths of hell

By what your Son came to be.

Hear my prayer, Lord.  Hear my prayer, Lord.

Hear my prayer and answer me.

Open my heart that I may praise

Your holy name and who you are.

The mighty God of endless days

You are my bright and morning star.

Hear my prayer, Lord.  Hear my prayer, Lord.

Hear my prayer and answer me.

A prayer of David giving glory to God, imploring him to hear
his requests for mercy and grace as well as help in days of trouble.

PSALM 87

Jerusalem

Jerusalem!  Jerusalem!

The heavenly city where you dwell

From here do all your blessings stem.

You are the Lord, Immanuel.

All glory be to you alone.

By your Son’s death we are your own.

God’s house is in Jerusalem.

He blesses all who come to praise.

All goodness comes alone from Him

In thankful praise our hearts we raise.

All glory be to you alone.

By your Son’s death we are your own.

God stands upon his holy mount.

He rules his people from this place.

There we for sins must give account.

From there he fills us with his grace.

All glory be to you alone.

By your Son’s death we are your own.

Jerusalem is the symbol of the heavenly city where God dwells.  It can also be
a symbol of the church, as the home of God on earth, the very foundation of it
being Jesus Christ and the mount upon which it is built
is the promises of God to his people.

PSALM 88

Listen to me, Lord, hear my cry

Listen to me, Lord, hear my cry.

Right now I think you have withdrawn

In troubled times I wonder why

When all is bleak you seem far gone.

I weep before you day and night.

At times I feel you do not care.

I try to do all that is right.

Come rescue me; my life repair.

I thank you, Lord, you did reveal

Your larger plan for all of yours.

You sent your Son our lives to heal.

He helps us steer a proper course.

All praise to you, our Lord and King.

You are a bright and shining light.

Salvation now to us you bring

You are the God of power and might

A psalm of very personal mourning without the usual compliment
of joyful and comforting words.  What can be said positively is that
his lament is directed to the source of salvation, Almighty God himself.

PSALM 89

O Lord, You are the Mighty One

O Lord, you are the mighty One

Strong is your arm; strong is your hand

We praise your name for what you’ve done

Protecting us and all our land.

We trust you, Lord; your Word is true

Search high and low; scan skies and land

Nowhere is there a God like you.

You are the Rock on which we stand

Open our hearts that we may praise

Your holy name and who you are

The mighty God of endless days

You are a bright and morning star.

Rejoice all people in the Lord

We are surrounded by his love

He leads us by his steadfast hand

To know the joy that dawns above.

The psalmist reverses the order from that of other psalms
in that he begins with praise and ends with laments.

PSALM 90

A Thousand Years, Lord, in Your Sight

A thousand years, Lord, in your sight

Pass by as though a single hour.

They vanish like a dream at night

The tides of time do us devour.

REFRAIN

Lord, let your wisdom show

that we may focus now

on things above and not below.

Seventy years you give us here

More may be given by your grace

The day will come when you draw near

To take us to your heavenly place.

REFRAIN

O, let the beauty of the Lord

Bring forth from us a gladsome song

We sing of Him who us restored

To live among the heav’nly throng.

REFRAIN

O Jehovah, come us to bless

With years of life your will to do

And grant that we may see success

When all we do is done for you.

REFRAIN

A prayer of Moses, the author, offered at the time of Israel’s murmuring and
complaining in the wilderness.  The eternal nature of God comforts the people
in the midst of their own frailty.  As Moses prayed so shall we  --  for a
sanctified use of our affliction, for words of peace at approaching death, for
comfort and joy over the repeated mercies of God, and finally that the Lord
would continue to smile upon us.

PSALM 91

Once Upon a Star Filled Night

Once upon a star filled night

The Lord came down to touch the earth.

Within the shadow of his might

God came to us of humble birth.

This I declare:  He is my Lord.

This I declare:  He is my Lord.

My Savior came to show God’s love

He brought a message of my worth.

To earth he came from heaven above

To live a life of humble birth.

This I declare:  He is my Lord.

This I declare:  He is my Lord.

I live beneath his shelt'ring wings
My armor is his promise given.

So of his love my heart now sings.

His promise is a home in heaven.

This I declare:  He is my Lord.

This I declare:  He is my Lord.

The peace of God is mine today.

I feel his love on me outpoured.

The shadow of his hands my stay.

It strikes in me a fervent chord

This I declare:  He is my Lord.

This I declare:  He is my Lord.

Divine protection is ours under the mighty hand of God.
The promises herein all relate to the coming of the Messiah.

PSALM 92

Thank you, Lord

Thank you, Lord; O thank you, Lord

You are the only one.

Praise to the Lord; each day rejoice

Find in his Word

You are God’s choice.

Thank you, Lord; O thank you, Lord

You are the only one.

Faith is he; look what he’s done

In Him I see

The victory won

Thank you, Lord; O thank you, Lord

You are the only one

You stand near by in times of strife

Your purify

My sinful life.

Thank you, Lord; O thank you, Lord

You are the only one

Exalt the Lord in heaven above

Thru Christ, the Word,

He sends his love.

Thank you, Lord; O thank you, Lord

You are the only one

How blessed am I, You shelter me

You will draw nigh

To set me free

What a song of thanks!  Praise God for his mighty works and let that be
the catalyst for faithfulness in all you do.  In what God has done for us
we see victory in all circumstances.  His great work of redemption inspires
and encourages us on our faith walk.

PSALM 93

The Lord is Dressed in Majesty

The Lord is dressed in majesty

His beauty shines throughout our days.

He lives from all eternity

He’s by our side along life’s way.

Almighty God sits on his throne

His laws stand firm for us to keep

All holiness is his alone

His love for us runs e’er so deep.

The thun’drous seas give out a roar

The pounding waves show forth God’s might

The breakers roll upon the shore

He keeps us safely in his sight.

God rules in truth and holiness.

And faithful is his every Word.

In Christ we see his righteousness.

His every deed points heavenward.

God’s love for us is clearly shown

O’er endless days we sing his praise

He sends his Son sins to atone

In grateful thanks our hearts we raise.

This psalm honors the God who is ruler of his entire kingdom,
especially of the unruly ocean waters.
