PSALM 78

O My people, Listen to Me

O my people, listen to me.

Open your ears to what I say.

My ways are meant to set you free.

I am your God; my will obey.

REFRAIN

FORGET NOT ALL OF WHAT I’VE DONE

TO WIN YOUR SOUL I SENT MY SON.

Glorious deeds I’ve done for you.

From Egypt’s grip I’ve led you out.

Divided seas to lead you through.

When men pursued, I them did rout.

REFRAIN

Quail and manna I did provide.

Waters that gushed and flowing streams,

But still you came to me and cried:

“You failed to give us all our dreams.”

REFRAIN

I led you by day with a cloud.

At night I sent you light by fire.

And still you came and cried aloud:

“You gave us not what we desire.”

REFRAIN

You turned your back and ran away.

You built stone gods to worship there.

I ask why did you disobey

When all I did shows you I care.

REFRAIN:

With words alone you followed me.

Still with your heart you’re far away.

My promise is to make you free.

But by my side you did not stay.

REFRAIN

Then came the day I said to you

Despite your sin, I’ll help you live.

Whatever you’ve done you’ll start anew.

The Promised Land to you I’ll give.

REFRAIN

In this psalm we have reviewed for us the wonderful works of God’s deliverance and the lack of Israel’s gratitude.  A study of history exposes sins common to every age.  It also reveals the manifold mercies of God in spite of his displeasure with our behavior.  Take seriously God’s rebuke of sin and appreciate all he has done for our salvation.
